In today´s society it is impossible to think about life without the influence of technology. We live in the age of digital culture, and are connected by many different types of devices, such as mobile phones, computers, television and an increasing range of new products; I could go on and on. However this begs the question: what is the impact of this new era in our life style? What changes will result from our use of technology?
A good strategy to address these questions, is to focus this article on a particular group: the digital generation, which is those people born in the 80s, 90s and 00s. All these people have no idea how to live without technology; which has made up a large part of their lives since an early age. They were educated in this “digital world” and their behaviors’, ideas and beliefs are result of this digital education.
For this reason, considering the impact of technology in education is important when discussing the ways to integrate education and technology, once they are already linked as a natural process. Students don’t learn just when they are inside classroom; the learning activity comes through many different channels, such as lectures, family, internet and messages from the media. All these channels contribute to the learning process; especially for these children who born in the digital age.
This way of thinking brings a new perspective for traditional education. Teachers need to consider new strategies to keep their students interested in lectures. The language of internet and media in general is quick, visual, and dynamic, whereas the language used by traditional teaching techniques is slow and static. The students, who belong to the digital culture, lose their attention easily if the lecture doesn’t follow the new learning trends. However, too many teachers still avoid the idea of bringing technology into their classrooms, using the excuse that it could replace their role, and that is not suitable to teach children and young people.
In fact, internet and media messages can be useful tools, they can help teachers to keep their students interested, and by using these tools the educators can approach many different subjects in a very dynamic way. On the other hand, the maintenance of equipment and training of teachers, to manage these new technologies, has a high cost, and this could be one of the most significant reasons why schools and teachers still avoid integration between traditional education and new technologies.
In conclusion, it is important to emphasize that technology is part of our lives. Whether it has a positive or negative impact is up to each of us, but as it is already integrated in our lives we need to accept it and try to make it beneficial and useful. One way to achieve this is to integrate it into formal learning processes.
